A couple of months ago, I was feeling pretty sorry for myself. I felt like every single time I opened the mail I had another bill. Utility bills, medical bills… the list goes on. It got to the point that I didn’t even want to check the mail! In college I loved checking the mail because I recieved cards and care packages from home. Since graduating, however, I don’t receive a lot of cards and no care packages! I love getting fun things in the mail and feel that writing letters/sending cards is such a lost art. I love sending notes to my family and friends… they’re much more personal than emails and text messages.
All of this was on my mind as I was on my way to work one morning. I turned on a radio station I don’t normally listen to and their conversation piqued my interest. The women on the talk show were discussing something I’d never heard of before: the Birchbox. Obviously, I had to investigate. Birchbox is an online subscription service that delivers 4-5 beauty samples a month to your mailbox. It’s very simple, too. Just go to http://www.birchbox.com/ and click “join Birchbox.” It takes five minutes. For $10 a month I get awesome make-up, skin care products, and beauty tools delivered to my door! Birchbox carries several brands, including Bare Minerals, Benefit, Stila, and Nars to name a few. You can also buy full-size products from their website. I love sampling new products, so this was a win-win situation for me!
I ordered my Birchbox in early March. Your box will ship the month after you order it so I had to wait patiently! I finally received my box last week. I went to the mail and there it was! I was pumped! I ran to the kitchen, cut it open, and began tearing off the tissue paper. I felt like a kid on Christmas morning (so cliche’ but that’s honestly the level of excitement I felt)! For April, Birchbox sent “green” product samples. Now, I do care about the environment, but I have never bought a make-up product solely based on the fact that it’s “green” or “environmentally friendly.” No offense to those that do, but if I want something, I’m going to buy it regardless!
Because Birchbox went the “green” route, I had never tried (or heard of) any of the products they sent. Thankfully, a card describing the products was included. Here’s what I got: LIV GRN, Natural Eau de Parfum; Suki Exfoliate Foaming Cleanser; Weleda Wild Rose Smoothing Facial Lotion; and Zoya Nail Polish in Dove. They also included a tin of Zhena’s Gypsy Fair Trade Chamomile Tea (they really went with the theme!). The sizes of the products surprised me in that they were larger than I expected (pleasant surprise!).
I haven’t had a chance to try everything yet, but I am in love with the face lotion (Weleda). I put it on after I washed my face and before I put on my make-up. I am obsessed with face cream and have tried several brands. After using this, however, I don’t know how I can ever use anything else! The lotion smells great and my skin never felt so smooth. My make-up looked airbrushed… it was perfect. The nail polish (Zoya) is also great. The color is not something I would normally choose (I tend to lean towards pale pinks and corals) but it’s a light gray color and appropriate for spring. It’s always nice to try something different!
So far, I am a very satisfied Birchbox customer! I am already looking forward to May’s products. I’m a firm believer in treating yourself. Yes, bills have to be paid first, but make sure to have fun, too! We work hard for the money… might as well buy some things we enjoy! Spending $10 a month on yourself is nothing and you get to try new and exciting beauty products! I can’t recommend Birchbox enough. Get excited about checking the mail again!
My products! I even love the presentation!
