My sister Dana’s birthday was Monday, but because we were all on vacation together last week, we celebrated her big day on Friday. A few weeks before, a woman from my hometown posted a photo on Instagram of her mother-in-law’s birthday celebration and I was immediately inspired. She gave her a gift an hour for her special day: I was blown away by the thoughtfulness and the presentation. My other sister Elizabeth and I decided we must surprise Dana the same way!
We coordinated via phone the next few weeks as Elizabeth lives in another state. Thankfully my mom helped as well by buying little gifts Dana picked out when they shopped together. Since we were going to be on the beach, Elizabeth and I decided to purchase small gifts and set the hours from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. We managed to snag enough treats to fill all nine bags.
After Dana finally went to bed Thursday night, we sprung (sprang?) into action! I was thrilled with how it turned out, even if it didn’t go exactly as I expected. I had issues with our printer before leaving town so I quickly hand-wrote the gift tags. I would have much rather used a festive printable tag and hope to make some for the future.
Dana was surprised and delighted- I think it made her day even more special! How often do you get to open birthday presents on the beach?! It was such a hit that we’ve decided to make it a tradition for all family birthdays. My brother’s birthday is in October and I hope to have all the kinks worked out by then!
A couple of tips:
I used cardstock for the gift tags and taped them to the bags. You could also tie the tags to the bags with ribbon.
I themed a couple of the gifts: one bag was filled with makeup and a makeup case, one was filled with jewelry, one with hair accessories, etc. You don’t have to do it this way but I think it added to the fun!
The possibilities are endless! It would work for holidays, too!
I’m happy that Dana enjoyed her day- she deserved it!
Apologies for the picture quality… everyone was in bed! Darkness is not conducive to photo shoots.
