I love television. We don’t have a ton of time to watch, but it’s one of the ways we unwind together. A few of my favorite shows have ended in the last year (How I Met Your Mother, Parks & Rec, Parenthood, and Boardwalk Empire), and Mad Men’s last season begins in a few weeks (WHY), but there’s been a crop of new-ish shows that have filled the empty space in my heart.
I know it’s the time of year to get outside, but there are still late nights and rainy days, and college basketball is over next month (tear). A few shows to check out if you haven’t already:
The Jinx (HBO): this show has blown up your feed the past few days as Robert Durst was arrested Saturday and the Sunday finale did NOT disappoint. Durst is a New York real estate heir suspected in the murders of three people, and acquitted of one. I am terrified of fake horror shows like American Horror Story and Criminal Minds, but have a demented curiosity for true crime. Durst is psychotic: you’ll ask yourself why he agreed to be interviewed in the first place. Real life is scarier than fiction, no?
The Affair (Showtime): The first season ended right before Christmas but you can catch it On Demand. J and I have a tradition of watching something together Sunday nights, and, while he was skeptical of this at first, grew to love it as much as I did. The Affair focuses on infidelity AND murder, but each hour episode is split into half-hour segments: one told from the male character’s point of view, the other from the female character’s perspective. You cannot beat the writing, acting, and stunning backdrop. There’s nothing else on tv like it.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix): Cassie from Sage wrote a great piece last week about her top Netflix binges and she should definitely add this to the list! I inquired about this on Twitter and everyone told me it was great… they were right! It’s written by Tina Fey, so if you liked 30 Rock’s humor, you’ll love Unbreakable. I’m only a few episodes in and have laughed continuously. And, as the perfect opening credits tell you: females are strong as hell.
You’re the Worst (FX): A different type of romantic comedy. The second season begins sometime this summer, but you can catch the first season online. Gretchen and Jimmy are the WORST (I’m drawn to unlikable characters)- they’re both narcissistic, immature jerks, but you root for their relationship anyway. It isn’t for the faint of heart… there’s lots of nudity, drug references, and every character has an acerbic tongue. Yet it’s right up my alley and often laugh-out-loud hilarious. You’re the Worst also has an amazingly talented supporting cast and I managed to emotionally attach myself to each character.
What are you watching now? Anything to fill my Don Draper-sized void?
