How was your week? Allergies out of control like mine? We were so busy this week but looking forward to the three day weekend! It still hasn’t sunk in that we won’t be watching Mad Men Sunday night. What did you think of the finale? I’ll love you forever, Jon Hamm.
I fall into the trap of loving a “conventional” beauty process: I’m a hoarder of makeup, fan of big hair, and lover of dresses and heels. Some might call me over the top… and they’re right. But there are some things I’ve done in the name of beauty that I’ll never do again:
Wear painful shoes. I have an embarrassing amount of shoes, but I’m slowly and reluctantly trading in my stilettos for sensible pumps and flats.
In my early twenties, I went on a date and wore a new pair of five inch platform heels. I felt sexy and confident… until I stepped on the restaurant’s cobblestone sidewalk, lost my balance, and fell off the curb onto the hood of a parked car. That is a true story. I busted my knees and my ego.
I also had a Monica Geller moment while attending a gallery hop. I wore the most uncomfortable stiletto knee-high boots and could not walk home. The shoes were no doubt made by Satan. I ended up crying and in sock feet in downtown Lexington in the middle of December. The free wine from the galleries might have had something to do with it…
Heels might look glamorous but some are painful, and, as I learned the hard way, some are dangerous. It’s not worth it!
Going to have to put these shoes in the back of the closet:
Bleaching my hair. I let a hairdresser talk me into bleaching my blonde hair because he said it was cheaper than highlights. He was right, but, I had to get it done more often and it nearly destroyed my healthy tresses. I had to have it bleached twice in two days due to a bad color- that was two years ago, and I just had to have a chunk of dead hair cut out last month. And my scalp has never recovered. It may seem fun but it will cost you a lot more in the end!
The bleach also fried my brain:
Tanning. I know I talked about tanning already this week, but it’s been on my mind a lot lately. I went to the tanning bed every day on my lunch break and when I got home at night. At 30, I have a huge dark spot covering my forehead that no product will cure. That gorgeous tan I coveted will cause me problems years down the road.
Wearing Spanx. I bought Spanx last year to wear as a slip under my summer dresses. It is a torture device. It’s uncomfortable, rides up my backside, flattens my breasts, and gives me bulges in places I never had bulges. Do women REALLY love these things? Are we lying? It’s our generation’s version of a Victorian-era corset. Someone may think I look like “two pigs fighting under a blanket”, but they’re not comfortable and I prefer my shape.
I hope you all enjoy your long weekend! What are your plans? And what beauty-related thing will you never do again?
