Are you happy? It can be a tough question to answer and one I’ve been asking myself a lot lately. That’s hard to admit. Going on vacation gives you time to think: I didn’t have to work, didn’t have to cook and clean, didn’t work on blog tasks, and only worked out twice- it was beautifully refreshing. I get lost in the routine of the week; who has time to think? When you’re overwhelmed and going through the motions it’s easy to lose focus on happiness.
For me, unhappiness is conditional and contingent on circumstances: I’m not an unhappy person, but certain situations make me unhappy. I wish I were a go-with-the-flow kind of gal who could let things roll off my back, but that’s not the case. I am high-strung. I’ve been so uptight and burned out and dejected lately and have decided to take some steps to live my best life:
Work towards what you love.
I’m in a bit of a work rut right now. I like what I do and am grateful but am in desperate need of a good change. I’ve become complacent on the job search because I work SO CLOSE to home and searching is incredibly time-consuming, but it’s time to kick it up a notch. I’d love to work from home so we can move freely, I’d love to do some freelance work, and I’d love to do get involved with an organization that appreciates creativity. The lack of flexibility in my career has me down- aside from vacation I never take off and feel my skills are better utilized outside of 6-hour meetings. I’m not sure what I’m meant to do, but I absolutely want to find it… and I’m the only one who can make it happen.
Support the endeavors of others.
I get such a high when someone I care about finds something that makes them happy. J is a crazy business-minded guy with these wonderful ideas and I’m elated when they come to fruition. It takes guts to take a risk and put yourself out there and I admire those of you who have vision. Whether it’s supporting a sorority sister on her new cookie making business, promoting a new shop or Instagram challenge from another blogger, or cheering on a friend or family member who has decided to make a career change or go back to school, just be THERE.
It was delightful taking a break last week. I mostly stayed off social media and neglected emails.I didn’t open my work email at all. It was glorious and much-needed. I never realized how addicted I was until yesterday when we suffered an AT&T outage which crippled the network at work and my personal phone. I tried to Google “AT&T outage” BUT I HAD NO INTERNET. I was stressed at first but then felt calm; I literally couldn’t reply to emails which felt unbelievably FREEING. Be present in your life.
Spend less time worrying.
As a control freak, this is the hardest for me. But worrying cuts into living. You can’t control everything that happens (as hard as I try) but you can control your reaction and ability to adapt.
Cut out your burdens.
If there are people in your life who weigh you down, move on. If you hate your job, find a new one. If blogging seems exhausting, take a break or quit. If it’s not bringing you joy, what’s the point?
Do more of what you love.
What do you love? Is it reading? Spending time with family and friends? Going to the gym? Writing? Creating? Singing? Cleaning? Talking to God? I read two books during vacation and felt more content than I had in a long time. Spend more time in that happy place.
Treat yourself today.
I am one of those “save it for a special occasion” types, but what if a special occasion never comes? None of us is promised tomorrow and it makes me sad to think of all the times we’ve said to ourselves “I’ll use/do that later.” Use the good perfume and lipstick. Drink the good wine. Leave your job to write your novel. Swim in the ocean with no abandon. The laundry can wait.
Let yourself live.
We structure ourselves and are wound so tightly that I wonder if we’re having fun? My days are packed and hectic and often stressful. How nice would it be to relax? Sleep in? Read a magazine? Go out on a work night? Eat a sandwich or a pizza? Life is beautiful when you throw out the planner (and calorie counter) for the day.
