Do you ever struggle with the “where is this blog going” question? It’s been on my mind a lot lately as I think my direction has faltered. Who am I? Who/what is this blog? I do not like labels: fashion blogger. Beauty blogger. Lifestyle blogger. We’re more than that, right? But, since we must “fit” into one of those categories, where do I belong?
I put as much into this space as I possibly can. We’re two super hardworking people trying to keep our heads above water. Every month we work hard to pay for three homes, two cars, pay off credit cards, save, and keep food on the table, while hoping we have a little left over to pay for bourbon and Sunday Ticket. You’re not going to get pictures of me making trips to Starbucks in my yoga pants at 11:00 am on a Thursday or having breakfast in bed on a Tuesday. Nothing glamorous here. We’re lucky but we also work for it and I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished.
As much as I put into my blog, I’m a terrible self-promoter. I can’t write “this is the best post you’ll read all day” or “my post had this many page views” or “here’s a sneak peek of me eating a hot dog” because it doesn’t come naturally to me. And I don’t mean that to be ugly- I admire the determination of those of you who do it so gracefully. I admire your bravery. You have the blogging world by the balls. I love supporting other bloggers but I struggle to bestow that level of support on myself.
And sometimes I get lost in the political correctness of it all: write what’s popular, include pinnable images, blow up Twitter and Instagram and Facebook with self-promotion, sponsor blogs, sign up for webinars, join giveaways and I forget to JUST WRITE. I didn’t start blogging to make a million dollars or have a post go viral. I started blogging because I love to write and connect with others.
So how do you stay true to yourself? Writing about makeup is fun for me, but I equally love writing about women’s rights and politics and why I stand with Planned Parenthood and why as a female I’d never vote for Donald Trump, and how I’m a smartass, sassy-mouthed, bourbon-drinkin’, Southern lady who will drive you batty once Kentucky basketball starts next month. I want to get back to the heart of it: the content I feel good about sharing.
All of this is to say that I have no idea where I’m going or where I fit. But I hope you’ll stick around.
And now that I’ve said all of that, please allow me to introduce you to a group of amazing (and non-insane) ladies.
