Happy Monday! I can’t believe Halloween is over. I had such a great time going Trick-or-Treating with my niece! I can’t believe it’s November already. I am not ready for the holidays!
I am a person who wants everything right now. Today. I’m impatient. And life is short, right?
I have always loved the saying: “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!” I know it’s a cliche’ statement, but I can’t help but find it wonderful. Do you apply it to your life? When I’m feeling overwhelmed with goals and desires, this mantra is not far behind.
When you set goals for yourself, are they big or small? I tend to overreach: I want to find my dream job and move into my dream home in my desired location and pay off all my debt and be in perfect shape. How do you get there? One bite at a time!
A friend once told me that when you feel like you’re losing control, clean the kitchen sink. You can’t control every factor of your life (as hard as I try): people get sick. People get laid off. Cars break down. Someone steals your credit card. Your washer stops spinning. The heat is broken. You oversleep. Life is messy and tricky and sometimes, despite our best intentions, we lose the battle. Some days are hard and we lose sight of where we’re going.
But it’s Monday and it’s a new month which means we get a fresh start. It’s a good time to refocus. Before you get overwhelmed, what are your goals and how can you structure them to work for you?
Work on my career: I want to learn HTML and CSS. It can’t be done overnight, so I’m dedicating two hours a week to classes on Codecademy.
Move: it starts with career changes. There aren’t many jobs in my field in our town so I can’t stay here forever anyway. This is more of a long-term desire.
Pay off debt: I just bought a new car so I’m starting fresh. My first step is creating a budget. That’s what I can control for today.
Getting in shape: I work on this every day, and as one of my favorite workout instructors says, “you want to lose 25 pounds? You have to lose the first pound FIRST.”
Are you going to slow down this week and shift your focus so you can achieve your goals?
