How was your week? Was it as rough working 5 days as you thought? It kind of was for me- a lot going on at work and some unexpected (good) things outside of it. I’m looking forward to a relaxing weekend with maybe a little organizing? I am actually frightened of my closet right now. And if you wear a size 9 shoe, you may have some presents coming your way…
When I mentioned that I wanted to focus more on beauty topics this year, a few of you asked if I’d share HOW I remove my makeup. If you’ve read my blog for long, you know I’m obsessed with skincare. And I like to update you on the products I use every few months!
Like most of you, I have different skincare needs depending on the season. Around November, my face became really tight, dry, itchy, and irritated. I’ve always had oily skin so this was new territory for me! I think I was using serum that was too harsh plus I was taking lots of drying antibiotics, so I stopped using everything: no face wash. No serum. No regular moisturizer. Instead, I started washing my face with water only and applying coconut oil after. I did that for a few weeks, and while it helped with the irritation, I started breaking out in places I don’t normally have an issue- it wasn’t just my chin, it was now on my cheeks, hairline, jawline, everywhere! I don’t think I was effectively removing all of my makeup and believe the coconut oil clogged my pores. Plus, it was difficult to put my makeup on over it!
Back to the drawing board. After a bit of research, here’s my updated winter skincare products:
Simple Brand Cleansing Facial Wipes: My optometrist actually suggested these to me (and I got some in my Christmas stocking!). I always used baby oil to remove my eye makeup, but with all of my issues, she told me to switch to Simple brand. They work great and don’t irritate that sensitive eye area! A fun tip: pop the towelette in the microwave for 15 seconds for a warm, relaxing experience!
Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser: I have used this for several months now and feel I’ll always have some on-hand. Dermatologists recommend it and it’s the most gentle cleanser I’ve ever used.
L’Oreal Age Perfect Glow Renewal Oil: There are several of these floating around right now (I’ve heard Olay’s is good, too!). This is for “mature” skin but I thought what the hell? It can’t hurt this 30-year-old. I just got it in the mail this week but I’m already happy. It’s blended with 8 essential oils and gives your skin a gorgeous glow. The oil is quick-drying and leaves your skin so soft. I even wear it under makeup.
RoC Retinol Correxion Sensitive Night Cream: I needed an anti-aging product that wasn’t too harsh, and ROC’s products are always at the top of every “best of” list. This product “contains a milder strength” of retinol for those of you with sensitive skin. A couple of things to keep in mind about retinol (and Retin-a, the prescription-only form): it is recommended to start using this product in your 30s. I started using it earlier (because I’m vain), but you can wait. Wear it at night only. Sun exposure causes it to become ineffective, and it can irritate your skin. Try it out on a small area before you fully commit!
RoC Retinol Correxion Sensitive Eye Cream: same as above. Ulta is currently running a buy one, get one 50% off sale on these products, so it’s a great time to buy!
Philosophy Renewed Hope in a Jar: I used Philosophy’s “Take a Deep Breath” moisturizer during the summer because it was lighter, but this time of year, I need the good stuff. This is super thick and a bit greasy so I apply it only at night. It is extremely hydrating!
Aquaphor Healing Ointment: I’ve been using this on dry patches, on my lips, and on my feet. It’s cheap, lasts forever, and works wonders.
I have always performed an elaborate bedtime routine. It usually takes me 15 minutes+ to get ready for bed. I start by wiping off eye makeup, cleanse and dry my face, apply serum or the retinol cream and eye cream, and then moisturize. It’s a lot, I know. But I love taking good care of my skin! If nothing else, remove your makeup and moisturize each night. You’ll thank me one day. 😉
