Instagram seems to be the “big” thing in blogging right now (even though it focuses on images). Trends come and go but this one might stick around for some time. So… how can Instagram bring readers to your blog?
Use hashtags: this is one of the best ways to gain followers (without a giveaway). I don’t like to clutter my caption, so, when I remember, I’ll post my hashtags as a comment. I gained 50 followers from December to January by simply remembering to post hashtags that fit my blog niche. My favorites are: #beautyblogger #bblogger #makeup #thatsdarling and #bourbon. Fitting, right? There are thousands out there, but there are comprehensive lists here and here.
Fill out your bio information: As I mentioned last week while discussing Twitter, if someone comes across your IG profile, they will want to learn more about you. I always head to the profile first to find out more. Don’t forget to add your blog link- you need to direct followers somewhere!
Be consistent: I try to post something every day but it doesn’t always happen. Consistency is the best way to build momentum…
But don’t overdo it: some days are more IG worthy than others, right? There have been a few times that I’ve posted a few pictures in one day, but I try not to overload the feed. Do you follow Prince (or Princestagram)? He will sometimes post 20 selfies in a row. It’s too much… even for a man who is too much.
Engage: follow bloggers or brands in your niche. “Like” photos. Comment on photos. Respond to comments. It’s not enough to just have an account. You have to put in some work.
Tag brands when you share a product: You never know when the company might ask to share your image with their followers!
Create a theme: I don’t abide by this as I use my IG as a blog and personal account. I will never be the type of person who can manage two- I simply don’t have the time or desire. I post a lot of every day pictures and the occasional meme. But, to stick with a theme, I often post pictures of beauty products, cocktails, and shoes. Styling takes a lot of effort. I think the perfectly-styled, monochromatic IG accounts are beautiful, but that’s not real life to me. I prefer something in between.
Edit your photos: graininess is out! 😉 Sometimes you need more than a filter to lighten a picture. And, as we all know, getting perfect light when you’re in an office all day is nearly impossible. I don’t utilize it nearly enough, but one of my favorite photo-editing apps is VSCOcam. For a list of other photo-editing apps, check here.
I love how a simple photo-sharing space can connect you with so many like-minded people and it’s fantastic to catch glimpses into the lives of friends near and far. Don’t forget to check out the tips from one of my favorite ‘grammers, Anne!
