How was your weekend? We had an impromptu pizza date night Friday, followed by Lush and Dateline (all the sexiness). I drove home early Saturday morning to go to the salon to have my hair highlighted and trimmed. I spent the rest of the weekend with my family enjoying the warm weather and the UK game. It was so nice to drive back to our house with the sunroof open! I’m off work today (praise hand emoji) to get allergy tested. Not much of a vacation day, but I’ll take it.
I didn’t do a “word” for 2016, but, there is one phrase that J and I have said nearly every day of the new year: why not?
My niece is two and it’s one of her favorite sayings. She first said it to me as we shopped at Target one day. She had picked up a cup, box of brownie mix, a hula hoop, and a sheet of gold wrapping paper. I asked if she was sure she needed everything and she innocently replied, “why not?” When I asked her if she’d like to take a walk over the weekend, she repeated the phrase.
I often find her words replaying in my head when I’m asking myself if I should do something, whether it be taking a risk, applying for a new job, taking the day off, buying a new dress, having a glass of wine, or sleeping in an hour. I love her philosophy: she wanted those items, so why shouldn’t she have them? Kids can teach us so much about life, can’t they? Two simple words from a child are now directing my life.
I know I’ve talked a lot about life and passion lately, but happiness is necessary to thrive. I attended church with my family on Sunday and the pastor’s sermon was about finding your passion. While the context dealt more with serving in the church, the takeaway can be applied to every aspect of life: where do you flourish? What are you thinking about in your spare time? For what are you willing to overcome obstacles and naysayers? What will you fight for? That’s your calling. That’s your gift.
I always dread Mondays, honestly, but let’s think of today as a fresh start. It’s not going to always be easy, but we owe it to ourselves to live a life we love. Reach out. Ask questions. Think. Pray. Stop letting fear and doubt overwhelm. And when you discover it (whatever IT is), don’t take no for an answer. Be relentless. Blow off the damn door and remember that you’re the one putting limitations on yourself. We can do this. Why not, right?
And because we’re inexplicably in a new month, it’s time for sponsor spotlights! There’s one familiar face and four new faces to introduce today. As always, I love that there’s so many talented, amazing women on this planet. Why haven’t we taken over yet?
