How much time do you spend on social media? It’s something I’ve thought a lot about lately.
Last week I was so annoyed with the Instagram drama that I swore I’d close my account. But I didn’t. I’ve posted nearly every day. And even when I’m not posting, I’m scrolling. What can I say? I’m a sucker for pictures of flowers and carefully-styled makeup products. I threaten to disable my Facebook account once a week. The ignorance. The opinions. The negativity. But dammit, I cannot say no to a good meme or fake medical story. I can’t do it. And don’t even get me started on the time-sucks that are Twitter and Pinterest…
Truthfully, I’m not accomplishing anything. I turn down many opportunities because I don’t feel I can dedicate time to them. I do work full-time, but don’t put in a million hours a week. I’m off on weekends. I work out in the mornings. But I’m behind on emails and networking and house cleaning and freelancing and friends and life.
I have approximately four hours between getting home from work and bedtime. How am I spending those precious moments? When I really break down why I have “no” time, it’s because I spend a lot of it on social media.
Here’s what I could and should be doing instead:
Spending quality time with J
Spending quality time with family and friends
Learning HTML/CSS, Java, etc.
Taking freelance jobs
Working on my resume
Working on my friend’s resume
Applying for jobs
Cleaning the house
This is a comment on me, not anyone else. I’d rather spend my time constructively instead of blasting out my opinion on Twitter every night. I check and respond to emails in bed and then wonder why I can’t sleep! So I’ll be cutting back on time spent getting pissed at the notifications posts and loop giveaways. Life is too short and I am an adult with responsibilities. And that wine isn’t going to drink itself.
Am I the only one who wastes too much time on social media? Any tips on breaking the addiction?
