I love refreshing our home but I’m trying to budget. When it comes to everything but lipstick, I’m the cheapest person on the planet. I will reuse aluminum foil. I buy almost everything on Manager’s Special at Kroger. I believe in splurging on certain items: I will never regret splurging on our amazing mattress! Trends come and go, and, if you’re like me, you get bored fairly often and want to switch things up.
A few tips I’ve learned along the way:
Amazon is your friend.
You can buy anything on Amazon. And I mean anything (if something happens to me, please someone delete my search history). I saw a gorgeous bedroom on Instagram with navy and white as the color scheme and had. to. have. it. The pillows in their picture were $75 a piece! No thanks. After a few days of searching on Amazon, I found comparable pillow covers for $8. Deal!
The quality was much better than I expected – the texture is silky and the material is thick. They fit perfectly over some old throw pillows and make a great addition to our bed!
HomeGoods/TJMaxx are your friends.
I am consistently blown away by the gorgeous and inexpensive products at HomeGoods and TJMaxx. They’re perfect resources for throw pillows, bedding, towels, furniture, and decor. I picked up an ottoman at TJMaxx for $20! And I bought three new throw pillows for our bed at HomeGoods for under $50. I also love their selection of candles! I love Bath and Body Works candles but will only stock up during their epic sales. TJ and HG have beautifully-scented candles for $5!
Everything in this picture is from Target, TJMaxx, and HomeGoods (aside from the duvet and flowers).
Target Made Me Do It
Target is the best for picking up home decor that LOOKS expensive. One of my favorite pieces in our house is the marble tray I scored from Target for $20! Last week I picked up two clearance lamps (marble and gold!) for $40 and a new bed throw for $20! We regularly stock up on their $4 towels, and I bought 6 pillows and sheets for my sister for their move for under $50. Last weekend I took advantage of a Cartwheel 40% off rugs offer to upgrade all of the rugs in our house. And they often run 10-20% off home goods sales. I particularly love their $3 wire trashcans found at the Dollar Spot!
I know. Shudder. There are a couple of things I buy when I make my yearly trip to the store: the Better Homes and Gardens collapsible storage cubes and their Flannel-scented candle which I cannot find online! I use the cubes to store blankets, towels, and shoes, and they come in tons of colors! The Flannel candle is a dupe for my favorite Bath and Body Works candle (also called Flannel), but it’s only $5!
If you have the time, a fresh coat of paint can transform any room. Last year we repainted our living room and it made a huge difference. We need to repaint the spare room and our bedroom, but we’re too lazy…
Add some greenery
I love fresh flowers and love how they add a pop of color and life. I bought a succulent at Trader Joes for $5 and regularly buy clearance bouquets at Kroger. Last week I purchased a dozen roses for $3!
Make your own art (or search Etsy)
I (accidentally) took a gorgeous picture on vacation a few years ago, and we both loved it so much we ordered a large print and framed it to hang in our living room. All together it was less than $20. Etsy has many prints available for $5 (or less!). Adding some personal touches to your walls can make a huge difference!
