I’ve received a few beauty-related emails lately and thought I’d break down where I spend my money. As you have probably gathered by now, I am a spender. Someone help me. But this gal also loves a deal! This isn’t your typical splurge vs. steal post – instead, I’m sharing which products I always splurge on, and which products I always buy cheap.
I have never found a drugstore powder or pencil that I loved or that lasted more than a few hours. I’m currently using MAC’s Veluxe Brow and Glossier’s Boy Brow.
Eye Shadow Primer
I swear by Urban Decay’s Eye shadow Primer Potion. It’s the best.
NYX Cosmetics Control Freak Eyebrow Gel: this is better than the Anastasia Beverly Hills product, and it’s only $5.99!
To be fair, I wear UD’s primer potion religiously and it keeps the cheapest of eye shadows in place. I’m a big fan of L’Oreal’s Infallible Eye shadow in Iced Latte.
NYX Cosmetics Matte Liquid Liner: I’ve worn both Chanel and Stila liquid liners, and I always come back to this. It’s $6.99 and lasts several months. It’s easy to remove but doesn’t budge while you’re wearing it!
MAC Prep + Prime Lip: I don’t wear lipstick without it. It smooths your lips and keeps lipstick in place all day. Perfect for wearing a matte lip!
NYX Cosmetics Slim Lip Pencil: There is NO need to buy an expensive lip liner – NYX’s product outlasts my high-end lipsticks and comes in a vast array of shades. The best part? They’re $3.49!
This is almost a toss-up for me as I equally love NYX, NARS, MAC, Urban Decay, and Bite Beauty lip products. However, you definitely get the biggest bang for your buck out of NYX’s lipsticks! I love their Matte Lipsticks and Liquid Suede. I’m also a big fan of Revlon’s ColorBurst Matte Balms. The best part about budget-friendly lipstick is that you can experiment with color!
You need a good base, and I’ve never found a drugstore product that blew me away. I have three favorites right now: MAC’s Prep + Prime, BECCA Backlight Priming Filter, and Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer Pore Minimizing.
BB/CC/Complexion Rescue Creams
I often let these take the place of foundation so I like full-coverage. I need to cover scars, redness, and dark circles – quite the tall order! I recently emptied the BareMinerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel and am thinking of purchasing the new three-piece set at Ulta that includes Complexion Rescue, powder, and a brush. I’m a sucker. Urban Decay’s Naked Skin One & Done often replaces my foundation, though I think it’s better for summer as it’s not as hydrating as Complexion Rescue. I just purchased IT Cosmetics CC Cream yesterday, so we’ll see if it lives up to the hype!
I’m highlighter-obsessed and am struggling to not buy all the new products on the market. My favorites (as of today!) are Urban Decay’s Afterglow 8 Hour Powder Highlighter in Aura, NARS The Multiple in Copacabana, and the Anastasia Beverly Hills Glow Kit in Gleam (can only find this particular shade on Amazon now!).
Urban Decay De-Slick Setting Spray: nothing better! I live in the south and our summers are like entering the threshold of hell. This product keeps your makeup in place, even on the hottest of days.
Under Eye Concealer
Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circle Treatment Concealer: The BEST. Covers my awful allergy shiners for under $10!
Physician’s Formula Butter Bronzer: moisturizing, glowy, and smells like a trip to the beach. I’ve worn it all summer and don’t plan on stopping anytime soon!
I’ve tried high-end setting powders and don’t believe there’s a difference between them and my budget-friendly favorites. My current go-to is Coty Airspun Loose Powder.
Don’t waste your money on the Beauty Blender: the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponges are amazing! I actually had to toss my Beauty Blender last week. It hurt. But tossing these wouldn’t hurt as much as they’re under $10 for two!
Whew! Sorry for the exhaustive post, but I wanted to cover all my bases. I love trying new products but almost always follow this system. Tell me – do you agree? Where do you splurge? Where do you save?
