When you tell people about your hobby, what do you say?
When I tell people I have a blog, I usually say, “oh, it’s just a silly thing.” You know what? That’s bullshit. Anything you love to do is not silly. It’s not stupid. Time spent doing what you love is never wasted.
I went to the salon over the weekend to get my hair done and I made a comment to my sweet stylist about how much we use Prime. That conversation evolved into a discussion of what we were reading, what we read in September, and our favorite books. I’ve known this woman for years and years and had no idea that she was such an avid reader. She said that she doesn’t talk about it often, but it gave us both a charge – we spent the entire appointment discussing what we loved.
So why do we often diminish what we enjoy? We should never feel embarrassed to tell others that we blog or craft or paint or run or make beer or read or memorize presidential trivia or dance or scrapbook or knit or bake or watch Dixie Carter’s monologues from Designing Women. I mostly keep to myself the fact that I’m part of private Gilmore Girls and Real Housewives groups on Facebook because I’m ashamed that it’s how this professional 30-something spends (a lot of) her time. Why? It’s what I like to do. No explanation needed.
How many people have turned their “silly” hobbies into successful businesses? Becoming a full-time blogger or author or artist or designer or photographer or wedding planner isn’t out of reach for anyone. Even if that’s not your dream, it’s still important to spend time doing what makes you happy. Think of it as self-care or a way to treat yo’self.
And when life gets tough, it’s sometimes the simple joy of a hobby that keeps you going. I know there have been many times when everything seemed like garbage and the only thing I wanted to do was bring it to the blog. Writing it out, connecting with others, and the act of creating were brights spots for me. There are times when I wanted to disappear in a book and forget the world around me. There are times I want to watch endless Housewives gifs because they make me laugh. There are times I put on makeup even if I don’t plan on leaving the house. I’m not harming anyone. Why not embrace it?
Do you spend time doing what makes you happy? Are you embarrassed to share your hobbies with others?
