I think we all have this “go big or go home” mentality when it comes to making healthy lifestyle changes. We quit junk food and booze cold turkey. We spend countless hours at the gym. We rid our homes of chemicals and snacks and sentimental clutter. But that is freaking hard to maintain.
I think (I hope!) there are smaller changes we can make in our lives that make a big impact:
Prep breakfast and lunch. My life is most hectic during the day, and, as they say, if you’re failing to plan, you’re planning to fail. I prepare breakfast and lunch for the week on Sundays. It’s an exhausting task, but I’m so grateful for it come Monday morning! To make things even easier, I ordered these meal prep containers from Amazon (affiliate link). I measure out my food after it’s prepared and stick it in the fridge. I can easily transport them to work, and they’re microwave and dishwasher safe (because ain’t no one got time for dishes).
Keep healthy snacks. The quickest way I derail a healthy eating day is when I come home from work famished. I need a snack, but reaching for chips and other junk won’t cut it. We have filled up a basket of nutritious snacks, like nuts and (perhaps questionably) jerky, that we can easily grab.
Essential oils. As I said last week, I have always made fun of people who used oils. I initially purchased them for help with sleep and allergies but have found countless other uses! Full disclosure(s): they have not helped alleviate my allergies. At all. I also purchase mine on Amazon. Perhaps it’s better to order from an MLM distributor, but I wanted to try them out before investing an arm and a leg. I’m thinking of sharing my oil concoctions a couple of times of month – if that interests you, let me know!
Remember that little things add up. I realize Weight Watchers isn’t for everyone, and there are parts of it that I don’t agree with. But I do need the accountability. Once I started truly tracking everything, I realized that all of the little things were adding up: coffee creamer. Mints. Olive oil. For a couple of months, I was drinking a couple Sweet & Creamy Donut Shop K-cups a day. They’re delicious, okay? They’re also 5 WW points. Five. So I was drinking about 10 points (at least) of coffee a day. I also keep Lifesaver mints for meetings and other times I have to be around people… those innocent wintergreen mints add up to a lot of calories.
Keep LaCroix (or your favorite equivalent) during the week for when you want something other than water. I drink a lot of water and a cup or two of coffee or green tea a day. When I come home at night and start to cook dinner or blog, I want something else. Usually it’s wine, beer, or bourbon. If I have points left after dinner, I’ll imbibe. But I don’t always and need something with a little kick. Enter LaCroix. I prefer the lime flavor, but there’s a ton of options. I also love drinking peppermint tea at night, especially when it’s cold.
I shared a similar post last month discussing small changes for a happier life. The two go hand-in-hand, right? What are you doing to have a healthier life? Please share your tips with me below!
