I hope you all had a fantastic long weekend! We went to my parents’ for a couple of days, watched a lot of football, and enjoyed the cool(er) weather. Bring on fall!
I was off work Friday and decided it was a good time to clean out my closet. I’m a hoarder and hang on to shoes and clothes for years – even if they’re riddled with holes. I guess you’d call me an emotional hoarder: I’ll say things like “I can’t get rid of that! I wore it to (fill in the blank).” I’m not doing myself any favors. I managed to rid myself of quite a bit and I’m loving how organized and clutter-free my closet looks. So it got me thinking – can I do the same thing for my makeup and beauty collection? That’s my next big goal.
Truthfully I don’t need that many choices. I wear the same color eyeshadow every day, use the same mascara and bronzer, and almost always wear shades of pink or red lipstick. And I’m pretty loyal to some products. I may try others, but there are a few items I always go back to. But my bathroom looks like you’re walking into Ulta… and not in a good way.
I did a little research, and here are the items you’re supposed to have in your collection (if you use all of these products, of course):
I’m not much of a minimalist, so here’s what would be in mine:
Eyeshadow Primer: Always and forever Urban Decay’s Original Eyeshadow Primer Potion.
Eyeshadow: Palettes do not work for me because inevitably I will only use a few shades. It’s a waste of money – my skin, hair, and eyes are too fair for the dark colors. I prefer purchasing individual shadows, and my favorite every day combo is Urban Decay’s eyeshadow in Virgin and I apply Milani Bella Eyes Gel Powder in Champagne in the crease. Neutrals definitely work best for me.
Eyeliner: I swear by NYX Matte Liquid Liner. It’s $7, doesn’t budge (until it’s time to wash your face), and a single bottle lasts me about six months.
Eyebrow Pencil: MAC’s Veluxe Brow Liner.
CC Cream: IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream. This often replaces foundation for me. It truly is as good as claimed.
Foundation: I take turns using Estee’ Lauder’s Double Wear Stay-In-Place Liquid Makeup and No 7 Stay Perfect Foundation. I prefer the latter in the summer when I need less coverage, but the Estee’ Lauder is perfect year-round.
Concealer: NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer.
Blush: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Blush: NARS Orgasm. It looks good on everyone. I may try other products, but, after 10 years, I always go back to this.
Bronzer: Physician’s Formula Bronzer in Light. The perfect bronzer for us fair-skinned gals. It’s creamy and smells like the beach.
Setting Powder: This isn’t its intention, but I prefer the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette. It’s pricey, but so worth the money. I wear it every day.
Highlighter: I am a highlighter junkie, but, if I had to pick one palette, I think I’d stick with Smashbox Spotlight Palette in Pearl. All of the colors work for me and it provides the most amazing glow.
Lip Primer: I think you know, but, in case you’re new around here, I swear by MAC’s Prep + Prime Lip Primer.
Lip Liner: Anything by NYX.
Lipstick: For the purposes of a capsule collection, I’d stick with three shades: a nude(ish), pink, and red. For my neutral, I love Charlotte Tilbury’s Secret Salma and NYX in Whipped Caviar. Pink is a little harder, but it’s between new favorite NYX Pin-Up Pout in Bombshell and MAC’s Girl About Town. Red lipstick is MAC’s Russian Red, Chanel’s Pirate, or Urban Decay’s Rock Steady. If I got my collection down to under 10 shades, I’d be a happy gal.
I didn’t include beauty products or tools in here – I think that’s a post for another day. My goal is to use what I have and replenish my favorites as necessary. At 32, I know what works and doesn’t work for me, so I’m spending less and less in the beauty department.
Tell me: do you have a makeup capsule collection? What’s in it?
